Project description

In the upcoming 2021/22 season, the Konzerthaus Dortmund will be staging an innovative New Music festival series entitled “Time Island” featuring a diverse programme dedicated to the Czech composer Ondřej Adámek. Adámek is known for integrating musical elements from different cultures into his compositions, combining the musical languages of places he has personally visited, such as France, Africa, Spain, Japan, India, Italy and Germany. He also experiments with the tonal qualities of ordinary and self-made objects. It was in this way that he created the musical automat “Airmachine”, which visitors at the exhibition will be able to experience visually and acoustically in the foyer of the Konzerthaus.

Over the course of five days and in close cooperation with the composer himself, the Time Island festival will present the entire spectrum of Adámek’s works. In September 2021, the opening concert and premiere of Adámek’s song cycle “Where are you?” will be performed by the London Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Sir Simon Rattle and featuring the opera singer Magdalena Kozená. The core festival will take place in January 2022 with performances of Adámek’s central works by internationally renowned musicians, along with projects and workshops specially developed for the Konzerthaus Dortmund.
Thanks to its interactive character, “Time Island – Ondřej Adámek” is targeted at a broad-based audience and will help promote artistic dialogue in the field of New Music.
