Project description

The centrepiece of the eighth edition of the Berlin Atonal 2021 festival is the multidisciplinary project “Universal Metabolism” which artistically examines society’s forced exercise in self-reflection caused by the coronavirus crisis. Over 60 international artist groups are currently developing pieces which challenge the traditional working methods in the art sector, defy genre classification and engage in creative, collaborative experiments in the areas of music, media art and performance. The project takes the term “metabolism” as the springboard for artistic research and examines the transformation of metabolic processes in nature, culture and society, as well as the “metabolic rupture” of the natural environment from the social system. Following the world premieres in Berlin, a selection of the works will be presented to the whole world including partners in China, Georgia, Australia and the UK. A digital and visual documentation will guarantee the project’s international visibility in times of the pandemic.
