Votre Faust

Experimental music theatre

Ensemble 'work in progress - Berlin', (c) Oliver Potratz

Henri Pousseur’s experimental music theatre piece Votre Faust has never been performed quite the way it was originally conceived when he wrote it in 1968. The main characters of the piece are a Mephisto-like theatre director and a frenetic composer who has been commissioned to write an opera based on Faust. What makes the concept so radical is its variability; the audience must decide the course that the opera takes, which means that the actors have to master several variations of the piece, of which only one is ultimately performed. The intention of the original piece touched on contemporary issues regarding the financial duress of the arts and the influence of popular taste on artistic decisions. Following its premiere at Radialsystem in Berlin, the production has been shown at the Theatre in Basel. The project will also produce a CD in order to make this little known work available to a larger audience.
