Description
How do we want to work and live together in the future? This question was the starting point for the TURN2 Labs in Nairobi, Dakar, and Tunis held in 2022–2023, which explored alternative knowledge and archiving practices, concepts of communal living, and the climate crisis as a crisis of the imaginary. Cultural scholars and practitioners from Africa and Europe were invited to come together to exchange ideas in workshops, discover local art spaces, and work in solidarity on topics that will shape future transcontinental exchange.
This online publication brings together talks, essays and artistic works produced by the participants of the three Labs. Some contributions focus on topics including archival strategies, counter-narratives to colonial history and felt time in urban environments, others emphasize the importance of artistic work and new collective narratives for sustainable action and highlighting the role of diasporic perspectives. As Anne Fleckstein and Martha Kazungu suggest in the introduction: “International artistic cooperation takes on the task of making visible the worlds’ indivisibility, of making palpable neuralgic points of global power relations and of negotiating visions of future co-existence and fair co-creation.”

TURN2 Labs took place as part of the programme TURN2 – Artistic Co-Creation between Germany and African countries. The programmes of the Labs were curated by partners of the German Federal Cultural Foundation, the Nairobi Contemporary Art Institute (NCAI), the KENU Lab’Oratoire des Imaginaires in Dakar, and L’Art Rue in Tunisia in collaboration with Ugandan curator Martha Kazungu, and with organizational support from Goethe Institutes in Kenya, Senegal, and Tunisia.

Créer ensemble – La publication des TURN2 Labs
Comment entendons-nous travailler et vivre ensemble à l’avenir? Cette question était au cœur des TURN2 Labs de Nairobi, Dakar et Tunis 2022-2023, qui se sont penchés sur les modèles alternatifs en matière de savoir et d’archivages, sur des projets de vie communautaire et sur la crise climatique comme crise de l’imaginaire. Spécialistes de la culture et acteur·rices culturel·les d’Afrique et d’Europe ont été invité·es à discuter ensemble dans le cadre d’ateliers, à découvrir des espaces artistiques locaux et à travailler de manière solidaire sur des thèmes qui ne manqueront pas de marquer les échanges transcontinentaux.
La publication rassemble des entretiens, des articles, des réflexions et des travaux artistiques de celles et ceux qui ont participé aux trois Labs. Leurs contributions abordent notamment les stratégies d’archivage, les contre-récits à l’histoire coloniale et l’expérience du temps dans les espaces urbains. Elles soulignent l’importance de la création artistique et de nouveaux récits communs pour une action durable et mettent en lumière le rôle des perspectives diasporiques. Comme le disent Anne Fleckstein et Martha Kazungu en introduction: «La coopération artistique internationale a pour mission de rendre visible l’indivisibilité des mondes et de négocier des visions de la coexistence future et de co-création équitable.»
