Transforming 68/89 – The Velvet Festival

Theatre festival and theme-based events in Brno. Funded through Zipp – German-Czech Cultural Projects / Thematic focus “68/89 – Art.Contemporary.History.”

Husa na provázku (Goose on a String Theatre) in Brno organized a theatre festival and a week of theme-based events to mark two important dates in history - the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the student demonstration in Prague in 1968. In addition to pieces produced by the theatre Husa na provázku, the festival featured guest performances of plays from Hamburg and Prague which were also developed as part of "68/89 - Art.Contemporary.History." These were accompanied by films, concerts, exhibitions and discussions. Some of the invited guests included contemporaries of 1968 and 1989, such as Vacláv Havel, Milos Forman and Karel Schwarzenberg. The Berlin group Stereo Total presented a German-Czech project based on the film "Tausendschönchen" by Vìra Chytilova. An exhibition portrayed what life was like in both countries during the 1970s and 1980s and a writer's workshop invited young German, Czech and Slovakian writers to write reviews and commentaries on the festival.
