Project description

The project “Modular Stage Zero” by the Wuppertaler Bühnen und Sinfonieorchester GmbH aims to develop a reusable, modular theatre set, thereby creating the basis for long-lasting, sustainable theatre operation.

Based on aspects of circular design, the modular stage will be used and publicly promoted in five opera house productions between 2023 and 2025. The management team identified stage design as one of the most pivotal areas for producing sustainable music theatre, and which also revives an age-old tradition. Even in the Baroque era, set designs were often refurbished and reused for new productions. The challenge of the new system will be to create a single, transformable, modular structure for multiple productions without presenting the audience with a seemingly identical set design each time. The opera house will collaborate with the Wuppertal Institute of Climate, Environment and Energy to develop and evaluate the module. Additional measures are planned, including making adjustments to material supply chains for costumes and props, the mobility of project participants and visitors, and stage technology.
