The project “Battles of the Nations – A Fringe Writing Project” was a joint venture between the Bonn “fringe ensemble” and the Schaubühne Lindenfels. Its aim was to further develop modern playwright-driven theatre based on collective working forms.
In 2013, Germany commemorated the 200th anniversary of the Battle of the Nations in Leipzig. In 2014, the entire world remembered the outbreak of the First World War. The theatre project wished to mark these European and global war commemoratives with a multinational “battle of the texts”. Inspired by actors and audiences, four or five playwrights of various nationalities met on the “Jahrtausendfeld” (Millennium Field) – a publicly accessible campus in Leipzig – and waged a productive battle of the wits as they reflect on an (imaginary) transnational society. Based on these textual battles, the project participants jointly produced performances titled “Battles of the Nations – The Plays”.
