Bayreuth Was Yesterday - New Opera at Kampnagel

Festival of contemporary opera praxis

What would opera look like if contemporary directors concentrated more on the music and the specific conditions of its production than on the libretto and the plot of the story? Three international co-productions (Via Negativa, Slovenia / Fanny & Alexander, Italy / Andreas Bode, Germany) and two guest performances (Carles Santos, Spain / Cie. Le Grain, France) examined the specific characteristics of opera as a genre and the relationship of directing and music. The festival also touched on the artistic approach of Fiodor Shalyapin, one of the most renowned opera singers of the early 20th century who based his performances on the physical materiality of his voice in a very unique way.
