The Chilean choreographer José Vidal and his company CÍA are known for choreographies that explore interpersonal relationships and artistic diversity in creative processes. In 2018 he and his company presented their internationally acclaimed piece “RITO DE PRIMAVERA” at Kampnagel in Hamburg. In spring 2019 Vidal has produced a new, major dance piece at Kampnagel entitled “EMERGENCE”, which has also been Vidal’s first world premiere staged in Germany.
This large-scale production consisted of some 100 dancers whose cultural, social and dance-related backgrounds couldn’t be more different; in addition to the twenty professional dancers from his company CÍA, the production included another twenty professional and sixty amateur dancers from Hamburg. José Vidal, who studied sociology and anthropology before becoming a dancer and choreographer, always asks the same question in every new production: How are social structures created, and how do many different individuals form a community, a society? Encouraged by Vidal’s emphasis on dialogue and mutual respect, the dancers reflected on these questions together and applied it to current issues, such as migration, integration and collaboration in a culturally diverse society. In this regard, EMERGENCE can be interpreted as a space for investigating and experiencing social movements and upheavals where intercultural exchange is the guiding principle.
