Gintersdorfer/Klaßen is an artistic group from Germany and French-speaking Western Africa whose productions translate and convey the cultural differences between Africa and Europe. As part of the Doppelpass residency programme, this cultural encounter shifted from the stage to the entire theatre and city. Starting with Bremen’s history as a Hanseatic city, which regards itself as cosmopolitan and tolerant, the project presented the aesthetic, human and thematic dimensions of the African-European relationship in a wide array of artistic interventions and installations throughout the city.
In addition to including a number of other pieces from the Gintersdorfer/Klaßen repertory, the theatre produced two new plays each season, along with a series of small-scale, quickly organized projects. The artists’ long-term goal was to maintain a vibrant dialogue between the company, theatre and city even beyond the residency programme. The hope was that the remnants of the interventions, performances, objects and symbols in the city take on a life of their own throughout the duration of the residency.
