My Square Lady

A Doppelpass-funded project by the Komische Oper Berlin and Gob Squad

Together with the Komische Oper Berlin, the Berlin performance group Gob Squad investigated the world of human emotion by attempting to teach a robot to express and evoke feelings. Supervised by performers of Gob Squad, the robot was put through a training programme at the Komische Oper for precisely this purpose. Supported by all of the departments at the opera house, the machine and the Gob Squad – as newcomers themselves to this genre – prepared for their music theatre premiere. The combination of video recordings and stage action allowed the audience to participate in the project and witness the performers’ setbacks as well as first successes. In the end, the production was presented on the big stage with the robot, playing the lead role and demonstrating what it has learned.
